WiSA technology operates in the relatively unused 5.2 to 5.8 GHz UNII radio frequency spectrum, reliably transmitting uncompressed
HD audio from 2-channel stereo to 7.1 surround, along with system configuration and calibration data. Older wireless technologies, by
contrast, operate in the same crowded frequency band used by cordless phones, baby monitors, security monitors, wireless Internet
hubs, and microwaves—resulting in interference and poor quality audio.
The WiSA Association was created to provide an interoperability compliance program for speaker brands and manufacturers of CE
Consumers purchasing products bearing the WiSA logo can be confident that these products will work together flawlessly in
the home theater environment. This level of compliance is especially critical for new and emerging technologies such as wireless
WiSA Certified speakers and components are extremely easy to install and configure.
Simply position the speakers where you want them, plug them into AC power, and
power up the transmitter unit (Control “Hub”, TV, disc player, game console or AV
Receiver). If the speaker positions need to change, they can simply be moved. There are
no speaker cables, connections, or speaker-to-amplifier matching required. Unlike
traditional home theater systems, a WiSA Certified system can be quickly set up by the
average user without the expense of hiring a professional installer.
Channels (e.g. right, left, center, sub, surrounds, rears) are assigned to speakers either
automatically or by using an on-screen display (OSD) on a TV or mobile app. Through
this process the system “learns” the locations of the speakers. Once channels are
assigned, it is possible for speaker distances and levels (output) to be adjusted
independently to create the perfect listening experience for any room.
Unlike traditional home theater, a WiSA Certified system can be easily altered, reconfigured, or upgraded without the hassle and
expense of running and connecting additional speaker wires or bringing in a professional installer. WiSA Certified products are tested
for reliable interoperability among transmitter and speaker brands, which is particularly important when it comes to scaling a home
theater system. For instance, you may want to start building your system with a simple sound bar and possibly a subwoofer.
Later on, when you want more capability, you might add a set of surround speakers. Eventually you want a full 7.1 surround
experience so you add rear speakers, a better subwoofer, and a WiSA Control Center/Hub with a 7.1 decoder. Since all of these
components are WiSA Certified, they all work together flawlessly and make each step of the system expansion extremely simple.
At some point the system may need to be moved to a different room, or into a new home. A grown child might move out of the house
and take some of the components with them to college, with the missing pieces replaced by newer components. Again, each one of
these system changes is made plug-and-play simple with WiSA technology.
Consumers’ purchase decisions may be made due to features, quality, cost, or even color. The important point is that they have choices
as they expand their system and are not limited to a single brand or type/style of solution. To achieve this, the WiSA certification and
testing program ensures that all products from all brands interact correctly.
